The Sault Ste Marie Big Sister program began in 1973 by a concerned group of citizens. In January, 1975 the first Annual Meeting was held and the Constitution was approved by the elected Board of Directors. An application was made to become a member of the United Way and staff was hired to work in the newly rented office space. In 1981, the agency became incorporated. In 2004, Big sisters became an affiliate member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada (BBBSC).
